Tip of the Week#6 DIY Flooring
August 28th, 2006 by markdownmomMarkdownMom has installed self-sticking and glue down flooring. One installation did not go as well. The project was a 3-season porch and after laying down the self-stick tile, days later there appeared gaps between the tile that were not there during the initial installation.
After conferring with an expert installer, he suggested that the problem might be one of acclimation.
- Every home has a different humidity and temperature and no matter what the flooring is, it is best to have the product adapt to its climate for a period of time before installing it. This prevents shrinkage after it is installed.
- Additionally, do not stack the boxes of tile one on top of another. This is especially important with vinyl since the bottom of the stack will have pressure exerted on it which will increase its’ size. Further adding problems to creating an even match.
These two suggestions seem easy enough and are applicable to most floor surfaces, but really do make a big difference in creating a professional appearance to your DIY project .
