Tip of the Week #17: When In Doubt Ask The Carpet Experts
January 27th, 2007 by markdownmomWhen wool carpets came back into vogue in the 80’s for semi-permanent, wall-to-wall installation, these berbers were not protected by any stain removing additives other than the natural resistance of the wool.
Although magnificent, most wool carpet prior to this were either clipped wool area rugs, runners, or large wall-to-wall rugs that were finished and bound on the edges and were not attached to the flooring. Therefore, even the largest size rugs could be rolled up,. taken out for a cleaning, or taken to the drycleaners.
The new semi-permanent status of installing wool carpet wall-to-wall with tack strips presented some unique problems in that a spill or soiling of any type meant that cleaning would have to be done inhouse, and wool presented some unusual problems since at that time most of the spot removing products were not recommended for use on wool.
Where to turn? One site that answers spot removal questions, and was an invaluable resource for MDM during her years in interior design, is the Carpet and Rug Institute. At this site, you can find solutions for any type of stain, on any type of rug or carpet. Like the beet stain pictured at left. Further, CRI offers help and advice in selecting a carpet or rug, industry standards of installation, environmental issues, and more. Also, you may find helpful the many consumer information documents published by CRI that can be downloaded for FREE! Because carpet can be a large investment in your home and you want to maintain that investment for years to come, it’s always wise to seek the advice of experts, and you will find it at CRI.
