  • ▪ Speak Produceze With Your Local Grocer For Bargains

    March 12th, 2006 by markdownmom

To tempt your palette with unusual and often expensive items, get to know your produce people. They not only can offer terrific deals on items that did not find a local niche, but are a real source of information for picking out produce.

For instance, this past weekend MDM went to the local super Wal-Mart. For a number of years, I like many others have been unable to get blood oranges in my area. My daughter spotted them in the produce section of Wal-Mart. Following up on that find, I spotted one of the employees gathering up the oranges and placing them in the back room for return. By asking a few questions, I was able to purchase the box for 1 cent over cost of each bag. Not only that, but the employees went through the box and removed any questionable oranges. Plus they explained to me and gave me a sample that when blood oranges look terrible on the outside, a condition with other oranges that would lead you to believe that they were ‘going,’ in fact, was an indication of their ripeness and peak flavor. And are they nice, colorful, and flavorful, just slightly more tart than other oranges. As a result, I am scouring the internet for blood orange recipes and my friends and relatives are sharing in this wonderful delicacy. I am looking at making juice and freezing it in ice cube trays, drying them, making candied slices, and vinaigrette sauce –even a cheesecake!
Be sure to check out the produce for what is in season, and any gourmet delights that might not be as popular. Take some time, speak with your grocer or produce personnel, and you can save money and expand your family’s palette and health by getting the bargains on these exotic items.
