  • ▪ It’s A Better Buy: Silpat

    February 15th, 2006 by markdownmom

It’s A Better Buy is the first installment of a column which will be regularly posted by MDM as she reconnoiters and finds items of interest for fellow bargain hunters. This offering is for the home chefs who are looking for helpful gadgets (for want of a better term), that not only save time, but money.

    SILPAT AND ALTERNATIVES
Silpat is a nonstick, silicone coated sheet reinforced with a glass weave that was developed in France in 1982 by Guy Demarle. This item can take the place of parchment paper especially in baking and pastry making. Silpat is the brand name for this item, but several new variations have been developed. Basically, this material can go from the freezer, to the counter, to the oven or microwave. It can be used repeatedly and provides an excellent surface for baking cookies and other goodies. MDM investigated the following sites for your consideration:   Sur la Table. This site carries most of the popular sizes of silpat starting at 8 1/4" x 11 3/4" at $14.95 to 11" x 17" jelly roll size at $19.95. However, you may want to also consider their house line of baking sheets such as the sur la table baking mat, 16 1/2" x 24 1/2 "at $24.95 which can be cut to accommodate pan sizes and their set of (2 ) 15" x 10" baking sheets at $14.95. Kerekes Bakery & Restaurant Equipment, Inc. Their prices are slightly less with an 8" x 11.5" at $9.50 and half-size and full-size sheets on sale. Also they carry a teflon nonstick foil sheets which are 16" x 24 for $8.00 and are reuseable up to 200x, tearproof and both sides are coated. Additionally this is a fun site with a plethora of culinary tools, etc. Please note they do carry a $20 minimum order. The White Whale. Prices on silpat run the same as Sur la Table with the 11" x 17" at $19.95. Armchair World-The Company Store. Silpat offering is a 16 1/2" x 11 3/4" sheet for $21.50. But this is an interesting site and carries some unusual items like the Amish Friendship Bread Starter & Supplies. Chef’s Professional Equipment for the Home Chef. Carries silpat and similar brand called exopat. A 16" x 11" regularly $25 on sale for $19.99 and can be used up to 3,000 times , from freezer to oven, withstanding up to 580 degrees F. MDM recommends checking out its clearance section. The Gadget Source.Com. Carries silpat at a competitive rate, a 11" x 17" sheet is $14.99, but what MDM liked was its unusual items such as a progressive fresh herb keeper for $9.99 especially useful if you are tired of watching your herbs turn brown before you can get to them and a produce protector refrigerator bin liners for $1.99 which they claim are used in grocery stores to keep produce fresh! Finally, Markdown Mom’s It’s A Better Buy recommendation goes to: Target. If you are looking for silpat’s name brand don’t go here since they offer only a microwave 10 1/4" diameter sheet for $18.99, however, Target does carry a comparable and, at times, superior product in their Chef’s Planet line. Not only are the prices better, but they carry a variety of sizes.
One of particular interest is the Chef’s Planet Half-Pan Size Duo Mat a 12" x 16" sheet with one side nonstick for kneeding dough and the other side for baking, or refrigerating candies, etc., on sale for $22.49 (reg.$29.99). Most of the Chef’s Planet sheets are on sale with 25% off. Besides the usual baking pan sizes they also have a 30" oven liner and a toaster oven liner, and microwave mat. MDM thinks the oven liner has real potential for chefs that are tired of items baking over and burning on the bottom of the oven. However, be careful with this item Do Not Leave in the oven during the self-cleaning cycle!
