In Search of The Old Fashion Malt
October 22nd, 2007 by markdownmomIn the 50’s and 60’s, a drive-in was noted for 3 items: burgers, fries, and chocolate malts. The malts were so thick that your straw and spoon stood upright in the center of the cup. All natural 100% ice cream, when no one knew about cholesterol or cared, made with whole milk. As the drive-ins have become more fast than tasty, we have substituted these rich confections for their weak cousins, shakes.
Snuffy’s Malt Shop has several locations in the Twin Cities area. The one that MDM visited is located on Larpenteur Avenue in St. Paul. A half or full malt prices differ by only $1, so get the full container that will fill your malt glass 3 times over. Choose from a number of flavors, MDM is partial to banana, but sampled her daughters’ chocolate banana–two favorite flavors of hers– and a rich brownie malted.
Known for its’ burgers you won’t have to ask "where’s the beef?" Good eats makes Snuffy’s a popular place for all age groups. To insure being seated, MDM recommends, if possible, going before supper time and during the week, or you may face standing in line–however, it’s well worth the wait to experience the delicious nostalgia of a thick malt with a juicy burger.

That Snuffy’s resturant sounds like a good eating place. To bad they don’t have one down here where I live in Joliet, IL. There is a place nearby where you can get REAL ice cream, not soft serve. Shakes and malts are nice and thick so that you need a spoon to eat them, it is called Oberweise dairy. They have their own farm so the ice cream is made with their own milk. Ed Beyer
Dear Ed; Thanks for the tip on Oberweise Dairy–when I get down in those parts I will look it up, sounds just like my kind of place. I am sure that everyone in Illinois will appreciate this tip. Keep them coming! Markdown Mom.
