The Russian Tea House located on University Avenue in St. Paul is a great sit-down or take out restaurant for a delicious, warm meal under $5. As you step inside you are greeted by the smell of cabbage rolls and friendly smile from Mrs. Alenov behind the counter of her kitchen as she stirs the freshly made Russian cabbage-beet soup, Borscht.
Once the home of Nikolai and Linda Alenov, the couple converted their house into a restaurant with the help of Nikolai’s mother’s family recipes. Upstairs is a sitting area to eat your meal and enjoy the company of others’ dining or to view photography of Moscow and other areas of Russia, some of which are available for purchase.
The most popular items on the menu include Piroshki (similar to a pasty or stuffed pastry–featured right), cabbage roll, and Black Russian tea
served hot or cold at only 89 cents a cup. Fridays only, customers can order Russian Stroganoff. Still hungry and need something sweet? The Russian Tea House has almond tea cake or large chocolate poppyseed rolls. The Russian Tea House has limited hours from 11am to 3pm Tuesdays through Friday, so stop by during lunch time or invite your co-workers for a treat.
