  • Go Hogwild At This Market!

    June 25th, 2007 by markdownmom

MDM’s first recollection of a butcher’s shop was one of entering a mysterious world.  With sawdust on the floor and the myriad of smokey smells; customers queuing up, chatting with the butcher, pointing at their selections in the case, packages wrapped in white paper with string–all created an atmosphere both intriquing and somewhat shaharizad to a youngster.  Meat markets today are more impressive given the sanitized version of picking produce at the supermarket.  Each market has a specialty, either in the cuts of meat, diversity, or in the preparation of the meat product. Every chance MDM gets to scope out a new meat market’s offerings, she does.

In Markdown Mom’s Tour of the Twin Cities #7,  Everett’s Meats located off Cedar Avenue and South 38th Street in Minneapolis offers several specialties including friendly butchers like Craig pictured in the photo above.

This meat market is noted for their smoked sausage that is done in two adjacent wood smoke houses located on the premises.  Other specialties that MDM recommends is their coarse weiners and ground sirloin hamburger.  Yummy!  Additionally, like any good Minnesota meat market, scandinavians can buy favorites like lutefisk and homemade swedish potato sausage!  And for those big familly gatherings reminiscent of a bygone era when farm families gathered  for a wedding or a similar special occasion, you can order a whole hog  which runs around 80 lbs. for $1.39/lbMDM has tasted this delicacy while attending a political fundraiser in Gaylord, Minnesota–your palate experience is sorely lacking if you haven’t tasted pork from a whole pig roasted on an open pit!

In the era of Super Stores, a visit to your local meat markets can’t be beat for freshness, safety, local fare, and pure enjoyment.  Besides, who can resist a welcoming smile from your favorite butcher like Craig?
