Getting Canned Can Be A Good Thing!
October 9th, 2006 by markdownmom
Fall means leaves, balmy days, cool nights and harvesting fresh produce from the garden. Whether you grow your own or go to your local farmer’s market, you can enjoy that fresh flavor of tomatoes, beans, jellies in the cold of winter. Canning is easier than ever. You can buy canning kits, or find antique cabbage slicers and crocks at online auctions, and get helpful hints from your local university agricultural extension offices.
Canning supplies are cropping up at our favorite stores such as Wal-Mart and Target. MDM recently found this set of (4) 8 oz. Wide Mouth Ball® jars at Target for $3.74. This is a perfect size for gifts of homemade jellies, marmalades, chutney, salsa, grated gourmet cheeses, plus homemade facial scrubs and creams.
Even empty, these contemporary style jars with platinum tops, and a copy of Les Confitures et compotes de Sophie by Sophie Dudemaine, the French Martha Stewart, or other canning books would make a wonderful gift for the frugal gastronome in your life. The list of possibilities is endless.
