Buying A Computer Basics
August 25th, 2006 by markdownmomIt is not difficult to tell if you need to buy a new computer. Your current model may do and you do not have to heed the so-called experts that suggest you upgrade your computer each and every year. However, just like a car, a computer is a liability – and as such – you will have to upgrade your computer several times during your lifetime. But is now a good time?
1. Ask yourself: Are you not satisfied with the current situation?
You should only upgrade if you are not satisfied with your current computer hookup. It does no good to get a new computer if you the one you have satisfies every single computing need you have.
· My computer is slow, I need to upgrade!
We suggest that you tweak your machine before you proclaim your computer is too slow. First, you should run disk defragmenter. That can speed up your system rapidly. In addition, you should delete unwanted files. Generally, if you have a little buffer space on your hard drive, you computer will run faster than if you packed your hard drive to its limits. A quick fix to a speedy computer is adding RAM (Random Access Memory). This upgrade costs less than $200, and is one of the most efficient ways to make a slow computer fast.
· I need to Upgrade to Support a Printer or Digital Camera
There are instances when you may need to upgrade your computer to support the latest digital camera, and that is a justifiable upgrade.
· I need a new computer to support Windows
Every few years, Microsoft (and Apple) release new software. As always, the extra features require faster and stronger computers. This is a good reason to upgrade, if you can afford the upgrade. Having the latest operating systems ensures that you receive less errors and computer problems – making your life happier and less frustrating (at lease the computing portion).
· You want the latest and greatest
In the computer world, you will be upgrading every three months! But if you want the latest and greatest, we recommend going with the Alien
1. Okay, it is time to buy a computer!
If it is mostly word-processing, then you are probably still okay with your present computer, unless you find it slow and wish to search and download from the internet faster than your present model. If this is your situation, then we recommend getting entry level computer from HP or eMachines. If you want a slightly faster computer with better reliability, go with Dell or Gateway for about $80 extra.
Do you play computer games or are graphics and graphic applications #1 on your list. Or need intense graphic programs? Then we recommend you going with the XPS models from Dell or any model from Alien Ware (www.alienware.com).
Or do you want more TV and media capabilities? Most companies have multimedia editions of their PC lineup.
Do you use the computer mostly for business applications? Make sure you check out the small business or home office sections. The computers are specially configured to adapt to networking and sharing documents.
3. What Specs are the Bare Necessities?
A few things are absolutely necessary to get the minimum use out of any computer:
a. Need a minimum of 512 MG of RAM and preferably 1-2Gig of Ram. Don’t shortchange yourself on the amount of Ram. Remember a little extra ram can go a long way. You will get the biggest bang for your buck with extra RAM in terms of speed.
b. How many high speed ports does the computer have? Should have one for Ethernet, fire wire, and several USB 2.0 ports. We recommend several USB ports because most cameras, smart phones and other devices connect to your computer through USB. In addition, you should make sure your computer supports wireless blue tooth – as this is the wireless way to connect your devices to your computer and upload data quickly.
c. Microdrive slots for memory cards. Most photo applications have the ability to load photos directly through these slots. Although they are not a necessity.
d. At least a 1.8 GHz of processor speed.
4. Where can I turn for Help?
a. Neighborhood computer expert. Most neighborhoods have computer experts that are willing to help you select a computer that meets your needs and can answer very specific and personalized questions. Slip them a ten dollar bill and you’ll always have computer help when you need it.
b. Best Buy has (at most locations) geek squad centers. They can answer all your questions and are knowleable.
c. Post a question in MDM’s comments space, and our experts can answer them.
