  • Bamboo–Decorating Green

    November 12th, 2006 by markdownmom

Bamboo flooring is the latest wood flooring and is both economical and a politically correct resource since it is an easy renewable source that is environmentally friendly.

Many years ago, designer Christopher Lowell used bamboo for decorative inserts on hallway doors plus as a chair rail.  We applaud his foresightedness and artistic acumen in challenging us to think out of the traditional box of design materials and centering our attention on the many possibilities of bamboo.

Furniture Find online carries 2" diameter bamboo in 6ft. lengths for $22.09+ free sh.  Besides natural, bamboo comes in designer colors such as  green, black, and walnut.  MDM suggests that if you want a natural contemporary look for a drapery rod, or building a bed canopy, picture frames, or a hanging rack for pots & pan in the kitchen, this is an easy diy material.  Also, cutting a bamboo pole in half can give you an economical edge or facing  to cabinets, furniture, or a tiki bar.

Another source is CaliBamboo that carries bamboo for different applications including fencing, mats, railings, arbors, and other projects.  This material is aesethetically pleasing, durable and strong for both indoor and outdoor applications–remember that scaffolding for metropolitan centers such as Hong Kong is made from bamboo.

And if you want to be really innovative and your climate will support it, you can even grow your own bamboo.  Talk about being a DIYer!
