This Bundt Is A Home Run!

Even the most frugal of us likes a sweet goodie or two, and if you have the time to try your hand at pastry, here’s how to make homemade and save big bucks!

MarkdownMom visited the store  for Nordicware®, a store located next to its’ factory in Minneapolis.  Famous for their bundt cake molds and mixes, you can buy nordicware cookware at 10%-30% off retail, and if you go to the far left wall as you enter the door, you will find their markdown area with 50% off and more.  On her visit MarkdownMom picked up a shortcake pan at 50%off and premixed bundt cake mixes for about $3.00

Plus if you are new to baking or want to hone your skills further, they offer instore classes.  There’s nothing better than homemade, and now you can cut your costs even more at this factory store!  When you do, tell them MarkdownMom sent you.

Not Quite Perfect Doesn’t Always Mean Seconds

Many manufacturers sell what is commonly referred to as "seconds" at great discount prices.  These items can range from expensive ceramics to textiles and should not be confused with refurbished items.  Oftentimes, what these items include are inconsistent color changes in the manufacturing process or changes in the weave making the item a little "off," or dissimilar from the original.

However, the term "Not Quite Perfect™,"  as MDM found can also include discontinued items and samples.  Recently, MDM visited a Lands End outlet called Lands End Inlet in Richfield at 820 West 78th Street, off of Highway 494.  There are several of these outlets in the Twin Cities,  but MDM came across this store in a strip mall and not the usual outlet mall.  Now, although the prices are less than the original retail, your best buys can be found on the 75% off racks or special promotional racks and bins.  Lands End Inlet at this site not only had the 75% off rack, but a shoe and boot bins sale, arranged by size,  with an additional 30% off the reduced price.  Like most great bargains, these buys were located near the back of the store away from the more visible traffic areas and Lands End Inlet properly identified this area as The Back Rack.  An example of the bargains in this area include jeans that retail at $45 for $14.50, and MDM was able to pick-up a turtleneck sh/sl cotton top for $5, reg. $24, not only 75% off, but with turtlenecks being shown for Fall, an item that is a classic and still en vogue.

Upcoming events at the Lands End Inlet include the Men’s & Women’s Overstock & NQP Pants from August 30-September 9th with overstock tailored/dress pants 50% off and all NQP pants for $7.50!

MDM loves both their online site and outlets for their classic wonderful cottons and imported woolens–you can be sure that the quality is always there at Lands End!

Mid-Late July A Time of Summer Clearances

Beginning now, it is time to shop the clearance racks and bins before the retailers start their "Back To School" promotions.  This is the time for your greatest savings on items you can wear during the remainder of the summer, and for next summer!.

Outlet Shopping.  MDM usually finds that a bargain hunter can do better on name brands by shopping the clearance at department stores.  However, there are a few exceptions, the major one is to shop the Clearance racks and bins at the Outlet Store. 10 years ago, MDM bought a blazer in a heavy flannel, apple green color for about $20 from Liz Claiborne Outlet at Tanger and it still receives compliments to this day.  Why?  Because classics even in contemporary colors do not go out of style!  That brings us to:

Rule #1.  When shopping designer name brands on clearance for next year, select classic styles.   This is generally true for items that aren’t dirt cheap.  For items that are priced low to begin with and then marked down 50%-75%, it is okay to buy trendy items which you can wear now, and maybe be able to wear next year.

Rule #2.  When you make a purchase at the outlet store, sign-up for their Preferred Customer List.   This will place you on a mailing list that will alert you to sales and coupons.  Which can be almost as good as shopping their clearance, but usually have a discount on a minimum purchase.

Rule #3.  Outlet Malls have specialized mailings on sales apart from outlet stores.   You can sign-up for these mailings at mall information locations.  Some malls like Tanger even have a special one-time membership fee of $10 which entitles purchasers to coupon books, special sales events, seasonal gift offers and even a $5 gift card offer on your birthday!   If you live close to an outlet mall and/or frequent it often, this may prove to be quite a savings!

Local Malls will be having their fair share of sales on summer goods in addition to preview sales on Fall merchandise.  Some department stores that do not specialize in sports equipment, but may carry summer sports paraphernalia, will be discounting–at least taking 15% to 30% off, the initial markdown during this time.

Bargain Hunters usually are buying presents for Xmas or Holiday gift giving including birthdays all the year round, but July is one of the seasonal times when you can really lock in some good gift bargains!

Chain Department Stores like Target, WalMart, KMart and others will be moving merchandise including summer totes, apparel, sun glasses, and jewelry not to mention patio and garden merchandise.  Don’t wait long to pick-up that special item since some stores clean house pretty quickly.

Recently, it was like Xmas for MDM when she found a large plastic storage container filled with shorts, sleeveless tops, and other summer apparel with the tags still on from last summer’s bargain hunting.  Most items were at least 80% off and just perfect for the ultra warm weather that has arrived!

It’s a good idea if you find an inexpensive article of clothing further discounted at 80%-90% off to pick-up several in your size, especially if they come in different colors.  As my friend, Georgeanne, once said to me:

"For that price, you can wash your floors in it!"

Bargain Banter: Dillards, Macys, Sears…

This will be a monthly post and if successful, a weekly post, that gives all bargain hunters a chance to exchange bargain hunting gossip, tips, stories, and finds. Starting off, Spring is arriving and the last chance for fall and winter goods is upon us.  It’s time to capture those bargains for next year.

From the West Coast:

Dillards.  Instore sale.  Our friend  Wily Warren from Las Vegas reports to us that this store is having a 75% off sale and  bargain hunters better pounce before the jobbers buy up the remaining items for sale to Marshalls and Ross. Warren overheard that they are getting merchandise from stores affected by Hurricane Katrina.  These goods are not damaged, NIB, but are still in the inventory from stores that were unable to reopen.

Macys and Sears.   Both these stores are having 50% to 75% off selected merchandise.

Macy’s online clearance has 10%-70% off, the larger the discount, the more limited sizes and selections.  MDM liked Macy’s frang olive tired skirt in the popular mixed fabric boho style, only size left is M, $12.99, reg.$38.  Now is the time to get next  year’s winter coats as most clearance coats and jackets are 50% off or more.

Sears online clearance MDM found a pair of Fawnes textured leather gloves for $2.99/reg. $24.00, a 88% discount.  Give a look at the closeouts that are in your area, too.

HomeGoods. An off-priced home decor and furniture superstore that is usually coupled with T.J.Maxx or Marshalls. They advertise 60% off specialty store and department store prices.  Get placed on their email and you will have a chance to win a $1000 gift certificate plus be informed on instore events and special sales.
