MOA Stores Boast BIG Discounts

Stores at Mall of America this weekend boasts HUGE Storefront Discounts, anywhere from the average 40% to 75% off at Old Navy.  However most of this was much-to-do about nothing.  Old Navy was having a Halloween 75% Off Sale, but most of these items included summer inventory.  Deb has a 40% Off Sale of shirts, sweaters, and other wear but none of the items were really impressive. The only sale worth going to is Rainbow’s 50% Off shoes.  Shoe sizes are small, but if you can fit them they are fabulous!  Suede mustard boots, high-heel dress shoes, and more!

Mall of America Not for All Americans

The Mall Of America in Bloomington, Minnesota has negotiated expansion to enlarge its’ holdings as the retail mecca; however, it still gets a poor grade in meeting the needs of all of its’ shoppers.  Since MDM originally reported on MOA’s issues of accessibility for customers with physical challenges, it has installed accessible doors, one at each main entrance.  However, wheelchairs are limited supply, and electric carts come with a $25 fee.  Last Saturday, MDM witnessed that a number of physically challenged customers were not able to secure a complimentary wheelchair because lack of supply, and rightly refused to pay the rental fee charged by the management.  Target, WalMart, Loewes, Home Depot, KMart, and a number of chain stores have seen the benefits of making shopping accessible to all their customers.  Citing the cost of repair and upkeep of these vehicles as the reasoning for the rental fee by MOA management flies in the face of sound business practice as the cost of doing business that could be shared by the individual retail establishments in the Mall.

The economics are there since customers who have access to motorized carts are likely to shop, and to shop longer than those who do not.  Not everyone with a physical impairment, temporary or permanent, own their own wheelchair, or have someone available to push a wheelchair, in order to shop.  Equally noteworthy was that for a Saturday in June, the MOA was not very busy, and the group that were asking for the aids at customer service was significant.  A suggestion as a middle ground solution for MOA is to tie the $25 fee into the purchases made at the Mall.  If a customer spends $25 in purchases, substantiated by receipts, the fee can be waived or returned.

It’s time that management at the MOA wake-up, baby boomers–the largest group of shoppers–are aging and it is not sound fiscal policy to ignore them.  If MOA continues to do so, such discriminatory, anti-user policies, and a poor economy will attract less and less customers and apparently after viewing the traffic at MOA last week, it has already begun.

Weekend In Review: Where The Deals Are Including Daily Tech Deals

The Mall was full this weekend since kids were on breaks and when you’re on break you either go to Fort Lauderdale or chill out at the mall, right? One would think that there would be great sale enticements; however, with a few exceptions to find the real bargains you are better off to save the gas and shop online.

One exception was Sears. They are having an additional 60% off clearance prices and a top with a retail of $35 with the additional 60% off was being sold for $5! Look for the round racks marked clearance in the traffic areas of the clothing departments. For the holidays next year, pick-up their make-up and nail kits which are half-priced at $9-$10. Also, check out prom dresses here some really lovely styles are available.

Lane Bryant instore clearance had t-shirts marked $9.99, priced $4.99 online.

Wal*Mart has some great electronic deals starting with the Garmin® nüvi® 200 GPS Navigation System daily tech deal $198.88, Sony® 32″ LCD HDTV daily tech deal $796. Prices are good through April 5, 2008.

Target™ is carrying Bare Escentuals kits priced at $49.00 includes basic eyes. Plus 75% off remaining Easter items.

Ritzy Tiffany’s Moving = Big $avings!

Shopping at the mall the day before Christmas usually congers up images of crowded stores, bare shelves and clothing racks, and people fighting one another for last minute sales.  MDM’s daring associates ventured out to the Mall of America yesterday but to their surprise actually found the mall to be rather tame.  Despite store-wide sales of 60-75% off most merchandise, the crowd was not that much more than you would typically see on a given weekday; much less than you would expect for a given weekend or summertime and certainly less than what you would expect for Christmas Eve.  Perhaps folks this year are being wallet conscious or have done most of their shopping ahead of time or on the internet.  MDM suspects it is a bit of each.

One interesting find from the Mall is that Tiffany Collection is currently having a Store Moving Sale.  All lamps and global imports (furniture, rugs, and home decor) are 50 to 75% off!  All items purchased at the store can be shipped free of charge.

Location: Mall of America (West Side, Second Floor)

A Funny Thing Happen On The Way To IKEA or Emergency Preparedness While Shopping

IKEA® is one of MDM ‘s favorite shopping destinations in the Twin Cities, but it can be very hectic to shop there on the weekends because of the crowds.Well, MDM found a great time to shop the IKEA store across from the Mall of America yesterday at 6:30 PM–or so she thought.  However, more than likely it was due to the Twin Cities being under a Tornado Warning that had something to do with limiting the number of customers since most had sought the shelter of their homes rather than a store.  But neither snow, nor sleet, nor dark of night can stop the intrepid bargain hunter!

After parking the car in the ramp just as the sirens went off, we went up to the restaurant for some good old swedish meatballs with lingenberry sauce and small, red boiled potatoes.  No sooner had we got our food, then we were asked to exit the restaurant and follow the employees directions to the tornado shelter. Parting a Minnesota from a scandinavian dinner can get ugly and it was only with the utmost assurances by IKEA employees bordering on a sacred vow that our food would be there when we returned, that we reluctantly shoved ourselves from our tables.  However, the more skeptical and brazen among us brought their food with them anyway.

Like troopers, and Garrison Keillor can probably affirm that Minnesotans at one time in their young lives were either girl scouts or boy scouts, we followed their  orders and were herded through a blocked out path created by the employees to the "shelter."   We soon found out  there were more of us than the shelter could hold and so it was children and pregnant women first.  By choice,  the rest of us stood outside the shelter area hoping that nothing would happen since we were standing next to the warehouse shelves with stacked inventory including boards, furniture, and anything that could become a projectile.  One customer asked if a couch fell on her, would they give it to her for free?   Now there’s the heart of a true bargain hunter!

The employees mentioned that this is about the third time that this situation had occurred since IKEA’s Minnesota store opening and the other times involved employees only.  They may have to revamp emergency preparations should  this happen when the store is filled with customers.  As mentioned before, the weather and time of day had kept the number of customers down, but still there were too many to provide adequate shelter for.  After the "all clear,"  we returned to our cooled dinners, but were treated to cookies and chocolate–see, IKEA knows sweets and chocolate cure everything –even eating a cold meal.

Notwithstanding all the excitement, MDM recommenced her shopping, briefly interrupted,  and noticed that IKEA had just received a new shipment of bamboo plants from $1.99-$4.99/each.  Additionally there was a large selection of woven scatter rugs for $1.99 and the "As Is" section had a number of furniture pieces, lighting, rugs, drapes and slipcovers.  Also, for the DIYer many furniture parts were available anything from computer tops, glass cabinet doors, to shelving.

Now is the time to pick-up the new free  IKEA  2008 catalog, or wish book as we call it .

It was an eventful day and all MDM can say about it is Uffda!

Notes From The Mall: Fall Sketches

Looking for some hot, inexpensive bling? Try back at the checkout where you will find some real markdowns.  MDM found $14.50 necklaces for 27¢, and a leather belt for 47¢ at Old Navy!  Makes one scratch their head on how they arrived at these markdown prices.  Many summer togs that you can wear into Fall are at 50% off and there is a special selection of apparel at 75% off.  Great look coming this Fall is the long tunic/dress w/ long sleeves and turtleneck, worn alone or with tights or leggings.  Online savings as well– It’s worth shopping for some back to school bargains here.

This year color Fall at MOA with black, berry, teal, grey, plus the ever popular animal prints. The trapeze dress is still popular and the hot word going into Fall is "layering, layering, layering!"  Also, the preppy look, the military look, and supersized handbags are getting a lot of play.

►Click Here for MDM’s MOA Latest Window Fashions Slideshow

MDM was real excited about the jewelry store For Love 21 where you can find hot and trendy inexpensive accessories including trendy jewelry and handbags.  Clearance items are located on back wall next to checkout, but you’ll probably get excited about the regular inventory since these prices are extremely low for the look.

Nordstrom’s Rack is looking a little thin on markdowns, but they are taking inventory this week and plan on having a Plenty Under Twenty Sale starting August 30th.

MDM stopped by the Twin City Grill for a late supper on Saturday night.  The service was quite good, but unless you have reservations, expect a 15 minutes wait–which wasn’t bad considering it was a Saturday evening.  Known for it steaks, MDM ordered their French Dip which comes with vinegar and salt french fries.  The food was tasty, however, MDM would like to make a recommendation that would improve this dish and that is to serve it on artisan bread with a hard crust–it would hold up better with the au jus.  For an added sparkle to seating arrangements, select the booths with the mirrored backing and rich wood tones for a vintage Hollywood feeling.

*Editorial:  MOA has made some progress on accessibility by installing automatic door openers.  However, the only problem is that the size of the door that now opens with an automatic button is regular size and requires some maneuvering for passage through by a wheelchair.
