What is broccoli rabe? Well, let’s define what it isn’t. Although it has broccoli’s name, broccoli raab is not related to broccoli. Imagine that! It is, however, closely related to turnips which is probably why the leaves look like turnip greens. It is a global vegetable/herb and goes by many names such as rapine, rappi, rappone, fall and spring raab, turnip broccoli, taitcat, Italian or Chinese broccoli, Italian turnip, and turnip broccoli, and others.
This is a great source of vitamins A, C, and K, as well as potassium, calcium, and iron. A terrific, easy dish to answer the question of ‘What’s For Supper Tonight?’
Genelle’s Broccoli Rabe Pasta with Italian Sausage
Ingredients:
- 1-lb broccoli rabe (trimmed and separated)
- 1-lb fettuccini or other pasta noodle
- Less than ¼-cup water
- 2-Tbsp olive oil
- 2-Tbsp chopped herbs (oregano, basil, sage, rosemary, and/or Italian parsley)
- 6 cloves garlic (chopped)
- 4 to 5 Italian sausage links
- 1 c. parmesan or other desired cheese
Method:
- Wash and trim ends of broccoli rabe. Slice broccoli rabe into stems and flowers with leaves.
- Sautee broccoli rabe with olive oil and 2 cloves chopped garlic. Set aside.
- Brown Italian sausage links in frying pan. Add 4 chopped garlic cloves and allow links to cook with cloves and juices on medium for a few minutes. Next add slightly less than ¼-cup water to pan. This will prevent grease spatter and allow sausage to cook thoroughly without excessive burning. Set aside.
- Boil water and cook 1-lb pasta al-dente.
- Drain water and add to pot broccoli rabe and sliced Italian sausage. Add chopped herbs. Mix over light heat.
- Top with shredded cheese such as parmesan or pecorino-romano. Enjoy!
Cooking Time: About 2 hrs
Serves: 2 to 4 individuals

Book lovers, pet lovers, and those interested in learning more about American Indian arts, culture, language, and history will love Birchbark Books located near Lake of the Isles and Calhoun Lake in Minneapolis.
Owned by the famous American Indian novelist, Louis Erdrich (Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwe), customers travel from all over the country to visit her bookstore. She is the author of several fiction novels, poetry, and children’s books and was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction for her 2009 novel, The Plague of Doves. Her artistry takes on features of William Faulkner with present-day Native-American fiction. This unique mixture is presented in the many characters that are repeated throughout her works and narrated in their voice, moving back and forth through time.
In store you can browse diverse topics ranging from Minnesota plants, geology, and history; American Indian culture, language, and history (with special focus on Objibwe and Dakota people); children’s books; young adult and adult fiction novels. Many of the books and book signing events feature upcoming local artists and writers. You can also find signed books for purchase by several authors, including Louis Erdrich. Also in store you’ll find jewelry, toiletries, and other pieces made by local American Indian artists and healing herbs and botanicals such as bitter root, sweet grass, sage, and bearberry.
Birchbark Books is the only independent bookstore owned and operated by American Indians in Minnesota. It is unique in that great care was taken to use salvage and non-toxic materials to build the store. The doors are from the ReUse Center in Minneapolis, the globe lights from an old school house, and inside the wooden floor is the original flooring that belonged to a meat market which was the site’s previous occupant. Birchbark Books takes a community-centric approach to doing business, supporting local artists and writers; having employees such as Manager Susan White greet customers with a warm and friendly smile and plenty of stories to tell; and each employee owns a dog which they proudly bring to work with them to greet regulars and newcomers. Drop in and when you do, tell them MarkdownMom sent you!

Summertime spells summer fun. And for bargain hunters nothing is more fun than sidewalk sale days. Recently the Markdown Chics attended Grand Days in St. Paul, Minnesota. This is an annual event that takes place around the first weekend in June and is a great opportunity to explore sites that are close by, in fact, in your own neighborhood!
Families, couples, and friends of all ages and their pets walked the 3-mile stretch between Cleveland Avenue and Dale Street on Grand Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota’s highland park district for Grand Old Day–the largest one-day festival in the Midwest.
The event started at 7:45am and ended around 5:00pm. Over 150 food and merchandise vendors and several entertainment venues lined the streets. Some of the highlight’s from this year’s event included several musicians such as a couple of didgeridoo players, a fiddler, a mariachi and a rock band.
Several food vendors that frequent the state fair were also there such as mini-doughnuts, corn dogs and brauts, gyros and other ethnic foods, ice cream and smoothies. And many artists were selling tie-dye shirts, jewelry, hand-carved furniture and masks. This event happens only one-day during summer, so mark your calendars for next year!
