Saving Money, One Dollar At A Time

For a couple of years, MarkdownMom has wanted to visit Aldi.  Some have referred to this grocery store as a thrift store grocery, but like their chain membership counterparts, Aldi provides an opportunity for customers to save money on staples and specialty groceries.

For instance, lump crab claw meat usually sells for around $15.00/lb., MarkdownMom found it for $4.99 8 oz., carne picada great in burritos, tacos, and recipes requiring shredded beef for $ 3.29 /lb., 16 oz. frozen mussels $2.99, frozen huge akia eggrolls $2.49 pkg., vacuum packed sliced genoa salami $2.49/lb., 12 oz.can of frozen limeade 77¢, and fresh fruit such as seedless grapes 77¢ lb., bananas 39¢/lb., Moser Roth chili  flavored chocolate bar $1.69, and more.

This might not be huge savings, but when you factor in the quality, the savings mount up little by little; MarkdownMom recommends adding Aldi to your grocery resources to spice up  family meals for less!

Get That Spicy Flavor At Home

Ever been to your favorite restaurant and wished that you could take that flavor home with you?  Now, a popular Chinese/Thai restaurant in St. Paul, Minnesota, the Big Bowl, is offering spicy condiments and appetizers  at its’ restaurant, local Lunds & Byerly’s grocery stores, and online.

Choose from Spicy Peanut Sauce, Soy Vinegar, Plum Sauce, or Sesame Mustard Sauce, online $5.95 each.  Big Bowl Hibiscus Iced Tear online $4.95.  Buy all four sauces at Big Bowl under $20.  Plus check out their egg rolls, dumplings, and potstickers to warm-up at home.

MarkdownMom says:   Sometimes, it’s the little things like seasoning that can take an ordinary dish and give it the “WOW!” factor.  Always pick-up brand name seasoning whenever possible for your pantry to experiment and use when you cook at home.

Some Like It Hot–Really Hot!

Many restaurants offering Asian fare include szechuan dishes suggesting a tangy, hot pepper experience from the Sichuan Province of China.  However, very few are authentic cuisine from this region and not all spices or peppers are created equal.  In 2007, Little Szechuan open its’ door offering 200 dishes prepared by chefs from Sichuan.

MarkdownMom enjoyed one of the restaurant’s popular dishes Kung Pao Chicken and to entice the sweeter palate an appetizer of honey shrimp.  Delicious!  Get enough friends so that you can try at least 3 dishes with a heaping bowl of rice and tea–you won’t be disappointed!  Moderately priced and served by a friendly staff.

You Say Rappini, I Say Rappone!

What is broccoli rabe? Well, let’s define what it isn’t. Although it has broccoli’s name, broccoli raab is not related to broccoli.  Imagine that!  It is, however, closely related to turnips which is probably why the leaves look like turnip greens.  It is a global vegetable/herb and goes by many names such as rapine, rappi, rappone, fall and spring raab, turnip broccoli, taitcat, Italian or Chinese broccoli, Italian turnip, and turnip broccoli, and others.

This is a great source of vitamins A, C, and K, as well as potassium, calcium, and iron.   A terrific, easy dish to answer the question of ‘What’s For Supper Tonight?’

Genelle’s Broccoli Rabe Pasta with Italian Sausage

Ingredients:

  • 1-lb broccoli rabe (trimmed and separated)
  • 1-lb fettuccini or other pasta noodle
  • Less than ¼-cup water
  • 2-Tbsp olive oil
  • 2-Tbsp chopped herbs (oregano, basil, sage, rosemary, and/or Italian parsley)
  • 6 cloves garlic (chopped)
  • 4 to 5 Italian sausage links
  • 1 c. parmesan or other desired cheese

Method:

  1. Wash and trim ends of broccoli rabe.   Slice broccoli rabe into stems and flowers with leaves.
  2. Sautee broccoli rabe with olive oil and 2 cloves chopped garlic.  Set aside.
  3. Brown Italian sausage links in frying pan.  Add 4 chopped garlic cloves and allow links to cook with cloves and juices on medium for a few minutes.  Next add slightly less than ¼-cup water to pan.  This will prevent grease spatter and allow sausage to cook thoroughly without excessive burning.  Set aside.
  4. Boil water and cook 1-lb pasta al-dente.
  5. Drain water and add to pot broccoli rabe and sliced Italian sausage.  Add chopped herbs.  Mix over light heat.
  6. Top with shredded cheese such as parmesan or pecorino-romano.  Enjoy!

Cooking Time: About 2 hrs

Serves: 2 to 4 individuals

What’s Old Is New Again #3: Celebrity Endorsed Kitchen Gadgets

On Monday, March 29, 2010,  Rachael Ray’s TV Show, her guest Super Bowl Champ Reggie Bush introduced us to the new manual

Quick Chef by Tupperware®.

However, this is not a new idea, the Veggie Chop™, reg.$41.99 clearance priced*$29.99.

Plus the scaled down version, the Instant Chopper, reg. $14.99 clearance priced *$9.99.

Now one can say that Tuppeware’s ® Quick Chef, reg.$52.50 with it’s feed tube is a better mousetrap, but if price is the driving force, then perhaps you should consider these alternatives offered by *The Home Marketplace.

Unless, we all lose electrical energy, personally MarkdownMom would rather stay with her Cuisinart food processor because of its’ expanded applications; but, then again, both the Tupperware’s Quick Chef and the Veggie Chop and Instant Chopper are greener since they are manual applications.

Wednesday Steal: For The Bride

One of the hardest choices for a bride, besides her wedding gown, will be registering for gifts.  When it comes to dishes, MarkdownMom recommends a simple white place setting.  You may ask:  “With all those wonderful and exciting designs, why choose white?“  The fact of the matter is that white goes with everything.

White dishes with gold or silver chargers are elegant and go perfectly with any decor and any occasion. Plus, it’s cheaper to carry out color or patterns in the linens such as tablecloths and napkins or the chargers then to find storage for numerous sets of dishes.

Mikasa has joined the list of online retailers offering + special offers and Midweek Madness special weekly deals and this week they offer up to 70% off Antique White pattern sets and accessories.  Just enter promo code: MWMAW at checkout!  At these prices you may get an entire service for 12 and more!

Tip: Always buy one to two more settings than you need in case of breakage!

What Every Swedish Cook Needs!

Even if you have a dishwasher, there still is a need to wash some items by hand.  Those nonstick pans, those hand-painted plates, the crystal goblets, the overflow from a large party.  Now, washing dishes isn’t all that bad if you have the space; if you don’t, then you juggle where to air dry the plates and glasses without taking up too much of your kitchen counter.  One way is to put your pans and larger cooking dishes in the sink on a drain rack–that is if you have a double sink.  But what do you do when that is full?

Ikea® has this great space saver Ordning (swedish for dish drainer).  The top portion serves to house your plates and bowls, and the lower vented shelf is perfect for glassware.  With its’ dimensions  19 5/8 “(length)x 10 5/8 “(width)x 14 1/8 “(height), this rack makes a small footprint on your counter, but does double duty.  Made of stainless steel, $19.99.
