Expert on Rachael Ray: Faux Pas or Faux (Pieds) Feet?

On Tuesday, March 17, 2010  Rachael’s Day Time Talk  Show ,  Rachael Ray’s guests discussed their most embarrassing body issues,  including excessive sweating, vaginal discharge, irregular bowel movements, and stinky feet.   Ray’s physician consultant, Dr. Ian,  explained the reasons behind these issues and tried to give helpful recommendations for treating these normal bodily functions, however something was left a foot.

One guest was a dance teacher who explained that her feet smell so foul that it has her husband and dance students running for the hills.  The dancer teacher admitted that she did not like to wear socks, but does wash and dry her feet often.  She said she masks the smell by spraying air freshener in her shoes and on her feet!  The physician stated, “we have almost a quarter of a million sweat glands in our feet that produce almost a half a liter of perspiration per day…For most of us, it evaporates so it’s fine, but for some of us it does not evaporate.”  And recommended that she continue to wash and dry her feet but use socks and to spray and use powder.

While it’s true that our bodies adjust for variations in temperature and humidity through perspiration which helps to regulate our inner body temperature to maintain good health, it is actually bacteria that cause body odor and not the perspiration itself.  Bacteria as well as yeast love to stay and multiple in moist, warm locations including human skin flaps, armpits, and feet.  They feed on chemicals in sweat and dead skin cells and their byproducts produce the foul smell we simply refer to as B.O (body odor).  Our gender and genetics as well as our diet and any medications we may be taking also influence sweating, body odor, and its intensity.  Wearing shoes and socks with inadequate ventilation promotes excessive sweating and thus higher bacteria accumulation.

Instead, people with odiferous feet should wash and dry their feet frequently, chose cotton socks that promote dryness over nylon or polyester, and select shoes that have greater ventilation (look for labels).  People should never, ever spray air fresheners on their feet! Some studies have shown a link between phthalates (a common chemical found in many air fresheners, shampoos, nail polish, and other toiletries and cosmetic products) and development of sex-hormone abnormalities and cancer.  Although a causal association has not been made, it’s probably better safe than sorry-especially since air fresheners do not mask feet odor very well and will not solve the underlying problem (the bacterial growth).  Instead opt for natural products for prevention such as baking soda or corn starch, making sure to coat a decent layer on the sole of the foot and in between the toes.  Some people who regularly use an underarm deodorant/anti-perspirant have found this product effective on their feet as well.

Sorry, Rach, this advice was almost as stinky as the pinkies!

In Memorial

Today, I attended the services for a dear friend who died much too early.  He was a member of those unheralded Americans who will never be listed on a news or an awards show; nor, did he ever seek that type of recognition.  He was one of the most capable and able-bodied men that I know even though he probably never weighed more that 125 lbs., and a farm accident had taken his left arm.  He taught me so many things as a DIYer, and he tackled all manner of problems with a smile that enveloped everyone in his presence.  We laughed together, cried together, and reflected on the problems we faced–together.   He helped me through a very dark period of my life after my mother died and I was in charge of closing her estate.  He held me when I cried, and he joked when I felt overwhelmed–he was a brother to me.

I learned much from Marvin and the greatest lesson that I learned is also the most painful one.  It is that our relationships  with each other should be paramount in our lives, and that all relationships require devoting love and time for them to grow and to endure.  Too often in this hectic society, we clutter our lives with nonsensical items and actions–and truly we don’t know what we have, until its’ gone.

What I do know is that people come and go in our lives, only a few stay forever, their name written indelibly on our hearts.  Time and distance can never erase their mark for they have become a part of our essence, our very being; that the measure of a person’s life is not the number of mourners that attend your funeral, but the quality of their memories and the love left in their hearts.   Marvin  loved his family, his two daughters and two granddaughters; his friends, and he loved God–and it showed!

Some people you may question where they go after death, but not Marvin.  He has gone where the angels go and we are left here feeling a tremendous sense of loss.

REST IN PEACE

Marvin Kriegh

In A Time Of Suffering…

One of the noblest ingredients that make up the American Spirit is generosity,  especially for those in need.   Whether it’s at home or abroad, even the most strapped of us will dig deep to give what they have to help others in dire circumstances.  The earthquake that occurred in Haiti, the poorest nation in this hemisphere, demands that all of us, who can, answer the call and give what  we can.  MarkdownMom encourages you to join her by making a donation of money at the CLINTON BUSH HAITI FUND.ORG.

Just Say No To High Credit Card Interest Rates & Fees!

As new legislation is slated to go into action, the banks and issuers of credit cards have been raising rates and fees for a number of months in an attempt to recoup losses from 2008 and 2009.  Many of these financial institutions have dipped into the bailout coffers and their ‘thank you’ to the taxpayer has been to initiate usurious measures raising credit card and bank fees.  Talk about biting the hands that feeds you.  To make matters worse, at the same time they are giving their top executives bonuses for a ‘job well done.’

Meanwhile, most of us are licking our wounds trying to make ends meet as we continue to reel from the economic woes of the high rollers of Wall Street.  If you are tired of others taking control of your finances and thereby your life, and you won’t take it anymore, then Markdown Mom offers these resources to make these fat cats listen in the only language they will understand–the power of the buck!

  • Take Your Business Elsewhere.  Investigate locally owned smaller banks and credit unions that will give you a better interest rate and more personal service.  Move Your Money has a listing of those smaller, consumer friendly institutions they have researched to give the consumer relief, catagorized by zip code.
  • After Moving Your Money, Keep The Former Credit Card Account.  This should come with two caveats, do not close that account unless you can restrain yourself to only using it occasionally and paying it off during the grace period, and only if there are no fees attached to keeping the former account open and active.   Why?  Believe it or not, completely closing that credit card account can hurt your credit rating especially if you are carrying a large debt.
  • Use Debit Cards, Money Orders and Cash To Pay Debts.  But be careful with debit cards, there are fees associated with this convenience, so be sure to keep a ledger of withdrawals and deposits just like a checkbook so that you can avoid NSF fees, etc.  Money Orders will carry a charge, but it is infinitesimal compared to regular banking fees.  Keep your copy of the money order for your records.  Using cash, get a receipt in case a question arises on any bill.
  • Seek Signature Loan From Credit Union For An Emergency.  If you are a member of a credit union and an unexpected bill comes up such as a major car or house expense, engine blows or furnance gives out, you can usually obtain a loan with no collateral, but on your signature alone.  This will require submitting a loan application and getting approval from the credit union management, and interest rates can be somewhat higher, but not as high as maxing out your credit card from a large financial institution.  Also, if you can schedule automatic repayment from your paycheck.
  • Keep On Pressing Your Government.  Press  your state and federal legislators to  set ceiling limits on close end credit and fees.  The legislation that comes into effect this year is not the total answer.

Beware Of Retailer’s Blip On The Markdown Scene, It May Be Inflation!

Markdown Mom has been following a disturbing trend with regard to clearance items on one of the home shopping networks.  One way to follow a desired item to get the best deal has been by putting it on a “wishlist,” especially with clearance items that are limited in quantity.  Usually a price change on a clearance item is a downward one, but recently these prices have fluctuated, countering accepted business practices, and in fact have increased.  Markdown Mom has seen this done in more than one case.  For example, a pair of shoes goes on clearance for $39.99, it may or may not become sold out.  One color variation may sell out at $39.99, but then the item reappears at $59.99  What has happened?

Well, some may argue that the new stock is the latest version of a tried and true style.  However, this is doubtful for a sandal being sold in the middle of winter–it is definitely from last season.  What has happened is that more of this item did not sell and the shopping network was able to buy up the remaining stock.  However, to warrant returning the item to original price, the remaining stock would have to be purchased by the retailer at the original wholesale price –doubtful even in good economic times.  Since it ostensibly was new stock, the retailer raised the price; however, instead of pricing the “new” merchandise at the clearance price, the price was raised on all the remaining stock including the old stock that wasn’t sold.  This would provide retailers a greater profit on the item then when it was first introduced when you figure in the reduced wholesale cost on the remaining stock  plus the regular markup the retailer takes when the item is repriced to its’ original nonclearance price.

What is being played here is game concerned with “when the item was purchased” by the retailer.  This is not a new pricing scheme, Markdown Mom has found that popular chains have done the same thing.  Ever wonder why you may find the same style and even the same color with one on clearance and another exact replica at full price?  When asked, store personnel have stated that the item for full price became a part of the inventory at a later time.  All clearance/markdowns are based upon how long the item has been in stock, and the remaining quantity.  Usually, past season is more important when dealing with changing styles such as in apparel and accessories.  Markdowns are taken to move old merchandise out to make space for new merchandise at full price.

What this shell game involving time represents is I-N-F-L-A-T-I-O-N either at the wholesale or retail level.  So when is a bargain, a bargain?  Well, the only way to tell is to know the stock and follow the pricing–and whenever you can, use the “wishlist” option, it’s one way to keep track!

Of Credit Card Debt & Money Orders

In this economy so many people have seen their credit card balances rise due to increased fees and interest rates. If you have fallen into the trap of credit cards and want to clear away outstanding balances that keep growing, now is the time to act. Citicorp and other financial institutions while seeking help from the government plan to raise credit card fees in order partially to recover their losses. If you are able to, now is the time to negotiate your balances and reach a settlement to pay any remaining credit card debts. Oftentimes, you can negotiate a settlement of your bill and reduce it by half to two-thirds. This means that if you have had an outstanding credit card balance that continued accruing interest and late fees despite non-usage, you can reach a settlement with your debt collector or credit card company to rollback that amount that you have to pay. Markdown Mom suggests getting in contact with them to reach a final settlement figure, plus at the same time negotiate with them to expunge any negative credit reports and improve your credit rating. With the current economic downturn, companies are hurting for cash, so now is the time to act especially if you have been avoiding your mailbox and phone calls from debt collectors. Further they would rather receive partial payment than for you to completely default and pay nothing at all. Make sure that you are dealing with a legitimate entity, better yet, go directly to the credit card company rather than a debt collector to limit your liability–remember, if there is a way to scam and make a dishonest buck, criminals will find a way. Then when you are done, destroy the credit card and make a vow to either pay in cash, put on layaway, or go without.

Secondly, you just found a money order that you had issued, but changed your mind and did not send it. Is it still good? Well, one would think that since you paid cash for the money order that it would be similar to a certified check rather than a personal check. Not necessarily so. Many companies are not honoring their money orders if time has elapsed since the date of issue, even without any condition listed as to conveyance. Check with the issuer of the money order, your bank or credit union, to establish if the money order is subject to any time limitations.

Paul Newman 1925-2008

Of all of Paul Newman’s movies with his wife Joanne Woodward, John O’Hara’s From The Terrace was one of my favorites. At the time of its début, it was a complex, titillating movie exploring the social morés of the wealthy. Beautifully shot, it is a story of redemption for an unhappy, married financial adviser who finds salvation in the arms of the “good” daughter.

I was fortunate to meet him in-person when I was 18 years old campaigning in Wisconsin for Senator Eugene McCarthy, an antiwar candidate for President. I remember how he came into the headquarters office in Superior, Wisconsin, shook our hands and told us how much he admired us and what we were doing. Paul Newman was a rare personality, a celebrity who tried to change the world within the political structure of the day, and who ultimately decided to help others by becoming a food entrepreneur and donating the profits of his company to help disabled and ill children. In these times of greed, Paul Newman was an icon for all businesses, big and small. He used his celebrity and financial power to invest in people and make their lives better.

He was handsome, intense, and unpretentious, and although at 5’10″ tall I towered above him on the day I met him; in stature, he will always be a giant in my eyes.

Tip of the Week #51: More Bargain Hunters Mean More Competition!

Let’s see, retail summer sales were a bust, Back-to-School sales were a bust, so now we have Halloween inventory and even Christmas merchandise making its’ appearance in the first week of September. What next? The 4th of July on December 25th? Maybe, at least look for more offers of free shipping for online items. Retailers would rather take the hit on shipping and try to remain afloat by moving the merchandise even at a reduced profit margin. Plus, in the current state of the economy don’t be surprised to see increased numbers of bargain hunters checking out the clearance racks and crowding the thrift stores and consignment shops. And then you have visitors outside the country, like Canada, where their money this year buys more in the U.S. With so many hunters on the prowl, if you find a good deal don’t hesitate, hoping for a better price–grab it, since oftentimes when you finally decide to return to the store to buy the sale item–it will be gone. This is especially true of any markdown over 50%.

One of the very noticeable signs of the continuing blight of the economy on the retail industry can be physically seen by shopping instore sales. Recently, Markdown Mom visited the local IKEA® store and visually saw the decline of available inventory and selection. As mentioned in previous posts one way for retailers to survive a sluggish economy is to control their inventory, one conversation overheard between an IKEA salesperson and a customer inquiring about a style of container no longer in stock, included the statement that they [Ikea]“… wouldn’t receive anything new until the present stock was sold.” Additionally, in its’ food mart, to maintain prices on items like cookies, the size of the cookie has been reduced, a trend that you will also notice in supermarkets.

Markdown Mom has come across meat being reduced for quick sale in places that has seldom occurred before like Sam’s Club®. Prime Rib was reduced to $5.50/lb. Don’t be afraid to take advantage of such sales. All you need to do is to either fix the meat as soon as possible or freeze it. You’ll enjoy it even more with the added savings.

Think you can’t eat out during these hard times? Check out gambling casinos. A local gambling casino has a delicious buffet that include prime rib, duck in raspberry sauce, and king crab legs for $16.95, and if your birthday is during that month sometimes you can get the meal for free and your guest at half-price. Only downside is not to lose the savings at the tables and slots, so gamble responsibly.
